Οverland travel from Athens or Thessaloniki offers astonishingly scenic routes and involves the short ferry hop from Igoumenitsa to Corfu. Daily buses make the run from either Thessaloniki or Athens to Corfu.

From Athens, the road winds along the Saronic and Corinthian Gulfs coasts, with excellent views out towards the sea. One of the highlights of the journey westwards from Athens is the crossing over the Corinth Canal. The Corinth Canal, built over 100 years ago, connects the Saronic and Corinthian Gulfs and separates Central Greece from the Peloponnese. A short ferry hop from Rion (just before Patras) to Antirrion brings the traveller from the Peloponnese to Central Greece again. The Rion - Antirrion ferries (crossing time: 20 minutes) operates round the clock. The route to Igoumenitsa turns northward, through the major western Greek towns of Agrinion and Arta. North of Arta (and its famous in Greek lore 17th-century stone bridge over the river Arachthos), the road winds along the Ionian Sea coast, past the resort of Parga and on to Igoumenitsa. The total distance from Athens to Igoumenitsa is 473 kilometres.

From Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa take the road south to Larissa (via the picturesque vale of Tempe, between Mounts Olympus and Kissavos). At Larissa, in the middle of the vast Thessalian Plain, turn west towards Ioannina, and past the 14th Century monasteries perched high on precipitous rocks at Meteora. From Meteora the road climbs high over the Southern Pindus range, through the mountain pass at Katara (1,690 metres), before coming down towards Ioannina, the capital of Epirus. From Ioannina the road winds once more over mountainous terrain, to reach the Ionian Sea at Igoumenitsa. The total distance from Thessaloniki to Igoumenitsa is 452 kilometres.

Egnatia Odos, the new highway which is conecting Igoumenitsa with Alexandroupolis, is the fastest way for people living in North Greece or people from the other Valkanic Countries.
